For my masthead I went for a style very much like MTV’s
unplugged series which is where I also got the name for my product from. I
decided on this as it fits very well with the subject of acoustic guitars as
naturally people see acoustic guitars as guitars which aren't plugged in hence
Unplugged. Also I used the design that I did as it's supposed to look like the
tape that you would see on musician’s boxes that they use to store their
instruments on tour. The overall look was one that's slightly scruffy but still
looks tidy in a sense. I decided to stick to conventions with my magazine as my
masthead is at the top of the page but it doesn't go all the way across the
page. Also this is very different to the rest of the Magazine but also that
makes it stand out more.
I looked up other magazines such as Acoustic and Q to see
how their cover lines were related to the the main article and made sure that
mine were in the same form. I had my main article titled “The Day The Industry
Stood Still” which I then moulded some other cover lines around so I made them
into ones that would be about other things such as collaborations and reviews,
always thinking about my audience and relating everything to my selected
audience. I used fairly basic fonts for my cover lines so they would be easy to
read and in turn catch the reader’s eye.
My colour scheme is made up of gold, dark red and white. I
decided on these colours as they work very well together and are very easy on
the eyes. As this magazine is for the reader of an age of 25+ I didn't want to
use bright colours as then it would look like a magazine aimed at someone a lot
younger which isn’t what I wanted from magazine. Here again I decided to stick
to conventions as it made my life easier and of you use too many colours then
the page becomes to look very messy. Also when thinking about the colours I had
to be careful as the guitar on my magazine was a golden with a dark red scratch
plate.
When I looked at
graphics for my magazine I wanted to keep it fairly simple so I ended up with
putting a small banner across the bottom on the page which says on it “1st
Anniversary” as I felt I could use this to fill the space I had at the bottom
of the page. And keep to codes I put this on every page in the exact same place
apart from my double page spread where I only put it on one side as it would've
got in the way of my article. On my contents page I had, for each section of my
magazine , a fade of colour behind them to get rid of some white space and also
to make the page look more inviting to the reader. Also on my double page
spread I had a few small boxes behind my main text as the background was made
up of different greys and blacks. These helped to bring out my text from the background
making it easier to read.
For my magazine I decided to keep whey space at a minim so I
only really have any space on my contents page where I don’t have a picture
covering the whole of the back ground as some of my pictures weren't of a good
enough quality to fit to the page so I decided to put one of the pictures in
the top right of the page and then for the text around that. Later on I decided
that I wanted another picture on there that would fill some space that I’d left
so I took a picture of my guitar and put that there as it could link into my
contents page.
I use a classics drop cap in my main article again, keeping
to codes and conventions as it made my work look very professional and well
made. But I decided to not make it too big as it may have taken up to much
space and too much of the readers attention. I also used pull quotes in my main
article. Even though they weren't actually in the main interview I felt they
fitted well because when I look through some magazines some of their quotes
weren't actually I the article so decided I might do the same. I have two pull
quotes and they are fitted around the main bulk of text.
Also in my main article I had to columns to make my text
look not only good but to also make it fit on on the page so I could have other
things on there as well. I also kept to the two column rule I’d set for my
contents page and front cover, so I had half my text on each side for those to
keep it looking neat and tidy.
